AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS VP DAY COMMEMORATIONS

The Minister for Veterans' Affairs, De-Anne Kelly, today announced $1.5 million in Australian Government funding for local communities to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific Day.

"This funding will assist communities to honour the service and sacrifice of the thousands of Australians who served in the Pacific, and heighten community awareness of the significance of VP Day to our country," Mrs Kelly said.

The Minister made the announcement at the 90th RSL Tasmanian State Congress.

Mrs Kelly said 15 August 2005 marked the 60th anniversary of VP Day, when Japan surrendered to the Allies, ending four years of fighting in the Pacific and ending hostilities in World War II.

"Many Australians were brought back from Europe to fight in the Pacific theatre of the war, and served in that region from 1941 to 1945.

"During that period, more than 19 000 Australians lost their lives, 15 000 were wounded and 22 000 were taken prisoner.

"I am confident Australians will embrace this 60th anniversary of VP Day and organise fitting tributes to the servicemen and women who fought so bravely for our freedom and democracy.

"Initiatives should directly mark the 60th anniversary of VP Day and may include commemorative ceremonies, marches, parades or exhibitions. Community and ex-service organisations can apply for funding from their local MPs to support VP Day activities.

"These community activities will complement the national Salute to Veterans in Canberra on 13-15 August, the centrepiece of the 60th anniversary commemorations," Mrs Kelly said.

Mrs Kelly said VP Day funding was available under the Australian Government's Saluting Their Service commemorations program.

"In this significant year, the Government will also provide personal recognition to surviving World War II veterans and war widows, in addition to support for Australia's participation in international commemorations throughout the year.

"Through the commemorations program, all Australians have the opportunity to participate in remembering Australia's wartime heritage and honouring our veterans."
