VP DAY A FITTING TRIBUTE TO OUR WORLD WAR II VETERANS
All Australians could be proud
of the tribute paid to our World War II veterans on the 60th
anniversary of VP Day, the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, De-Anne Kelly, said
today.
"Around Australia during the past few days, people have shown their gratitude to
our veterans in the warmest, most appreciative way, as they have remembered and
celebrated the anniversary of Victory in the Pacific and the end of the war,"
Mrs Kelly said.
"I have had the opportunity to meet many veterans and their families and to say
thank you personally for their service and contribution to our freedom and
democracy - all were deeply moved by the range of events and the number of
people that turned out in their honour.
"In Canberra, the national Salute to Veterans was an outstanding success,
with an estimated crowd of more than 100 000 on Sunday. Veterans and their
families enjoyed the special area set aside for them and the displays led by the
Australian Defence Force could only be described as superb.
"The reception in the Great Hall honoured some 600 veterans and their families
and friends, and the national ceremony at the Australian War Memorial on VP Day
itself was a fitting finale to the weekend."
Mrs Kelly said the Salute to Veterans had formed the centrepiece of
events held in capital cities, regional centres and towns to remember the joy of
peace 60 years ago as well as the loss of some 40 000 men and women in the
defence of Australia.
"From Fremantle and Perth to Sydney,
from Hobart to Townsville, throughout the nation we saw thousands turn out for
receptions, concerts, special displays, parades, sporting events, school visits
and, of course, services of remembrance and thanks for the service and sacrifice
of our veterans," the Minister said.
"Many veterans were also proud and delighted to be presented with their
commemorative medallion struck by the Australian Government to mark the 60th
anniversary of the end of World War II.
"It was a magnificent weekend that helped recreate some of the mood of Australia
on that first VP Day on 15 August 1945.
"The Australian Government was proud to support and promote the recognition of
Australia's World War II veterans in this special commemorative year. We can all
be proud of the way that Australia has shown that we still appreciate and honour
their service to our nation."
