NEW APPOINTMENT TO MILITARY
REHABILITATION AND COMPENSATION COMMISSION
The Minister for Veterans' Affairs, De-Anne Kelly, today announced
the appointment of Major General Mark Evans DSC AM as a member of
the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission.
Mrs Kelly said it was important that a senior member of the
Australian Defence Force be on the Commission, which is responsible
for administering the compensation scheme that covers ADF personnel
who suffer injury or illness as a result of their service.
"Major General Evans has served in the ADF since 1976 and during
this time has held a number of different operational and
administrative roles," Mrs Kelly said.
"His achievements in the field and as an administrator bring an
impressive knowledge of military specific issues to the Commission.
"As Head of Defence Personnel Executive, Major General Evans has a
thorough understanding of the needs of ADF members of the three
service arms."
During his ADF career of 29 years, Major General Evans has served
with the United Nations in the Middle East, commanded the 6th
Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment and the 3rd Brigade of
the Army as well as holding the position of Deputy Chief of Joint
Operations. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in
1994 and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in 2000.
The Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission comprises
five members, including the President and Deputy President of the
Repatriation Commission, two members nominated by the Minister for
Veterans' Affairs and the Minister for Employment and Workplace
Relations, and a member of the Australian Defence Force, nominated
by the Minister for Defence.
The Commission is responsible for administering the Military
Rehabilitation and Compensation Act, which covers all ADF personnel
for compensation and other benefits for injuries or disease suffered
due to their service on or after 1 July 2004, and for the dependants
of ADF members whose deaths were the result of their service.
