AUSTRALIA'S KOREAN WAR NOMINAL ROLL GOES ONLINE
Students, historians, researchers and others with an interest in
Australia's involvement in the Korean War will now have online
access to the nominal roll of Australians who served in that
conflict, the Minister for Veterans'
Affairs, De-Anne Kelly, said today.
Mrs Kelly said the new website for the Nominal Roll of Australian
Veterans of the Korean War had been released on the Internet to
coincide with the anniversary of the end of hostilities in Korea in
1953.
"Today is the 52nd anniversary of the signing of the armistice and
the new online nominal roll commemorates more than 17,000 Australian
men and women who served in the defence of South Korea," Mrs Kelly
said.
The nominal roll was released as a hardcopy book in April 2000,
using data collected for the Government's health studies of
Australian Korean War veterans.
"The online nominal roll is able to provide more information than
the book and includes a search engine capable of searching the roll
using 14 factors such as name, service number, rank, unit or
occupation.
"The roll is also linked directly to the Australian War Memorial
website, allowing researchers to move directly from one site to the
other to search for additional information," the Minister said.
Mrs Kelly said the nominal roll would be an important tool for
Australians searching for information on the wartime service of
family members, as well as a valuable resource for researchers here
and all over the world.
"Australia was one of the first nations to answer the call from the
United Nations to defend freedom and democracy in South Korea, and
we take great pride in those Australians who served with distinction
in the Korean War.
"It is through commemorative efforts such as this nominal roll that
the dedication and courage of Australia's men and women is
remembered. The Australian Government is proud to make this resource
available in honour of those who serve in the defence of our
nation," Mrs Kelly said.
