INAUGURAL PRESENTATION OF THE NAA 'WAINING PERPETUAL MEMORIAL AWARD' TO THE DUX OF
THE BASIC HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEYING COURSE 052/09 AT HMAS PENGUIN 3 DECEMBER 2009
SMNHSO Mardi PRITCHARD was the inaugural Dux of the Basic Hydro Course and received her prize of a Multi Purpose tool and a certificate from National President Les Dwyer at HMAS PENGUIN at the course's graduation ceremony on 3 December 2009. Her name was inscribed on the Perpetual Shield and will be displayed in the Hydrographic School at HMAS PENGUIN.
The MC for the Graduation ceremony was CMDR Matt Houstron, OIC of the Hydrographic School, staff from Fleet, the RAN Hydrographic School together with family members and the graduates took part in a wonderful graduation that will be remembered by all.
This award remembers and is a memorial to WOSR Dave Waining - a legend in the Hydrographic Branch. Mrs Freda Mulry, Dave's sister was present on the day together with other family members to represent Dave including David and Sheila Waining, Brian and Valerie Giddings and Barry Waining.
The Deputy Hydrographer, Australia - CAPT Brett Brace was present representing the Hydrographer Australia. CAPT Vaughn Rixon - Commander MW, Hydro and PB Force together with the Commanding Officer HMAS PENGUIN, CMDR Michael Hickey RAN and WOB Andrew Freame - Staff Officer Category Management (HMFEG)
CAPT Ray Leggatt represented the Fleet Commander and the Fleet Training Group at the ceremony.
The Basic Hydrographic Surveying Course consists of 10 weeks at HMAS PENGUIN, during which time the trainee sailors learn about the theory of surveying and the use of equipment both on land and sea. This culminates with a one week deployment to Bantry Bay in Sydney Harbour where everything learnt is brought together to survey the surrounding waters.
The Naval Association of Australia congratulates the graduates from this course and commends the Hydrographic School for the valuable training it provides.
