USS TARAWA - Visited Hobart during Coral Sea Commemorations

Coral Sea day in Launceston was held at the Cenotaph at 11.00 hours 7th may 2008. The weather was very kind, so we had a very good roll up at the Commemoration Service.

The Governor of Tasmania, His Excellency Mr Peter Underwood AO was in attendance with Mr. Aric Schwan representing the US Consul- General, Melbourne.

The Hon. Jodie Campbell MP represented the Prime Minister.   Also in attendance was the Deputy Lord Mayor of Hobart, Local Defence Geographical Commanders, many dignitaries,  guests and representatives from Schools.  All studen representaives spoke and laid wreaths on behalf of their schools.

Commander Tony Vine ADC RAN (Commanding Officer Naval HQ Hobart) was our Guest Speaker.  Several other RAN officers were present and a Captain U.S. Marines who was joining her ship (USS Tarawa) in Hobart two days later.

After the Service the about 60 guests enjoyed a delightful Luncheon.

Several politicians attended and our Sub Section Members all commented on the good day.

The Carrier Reception on Saturday night 10th May 2008 was well attended.   USS TARAWA is an older Carrier and had just spent time in the Gulf and made Australian port calls at Fremantle and Hobart.

Several photographs of people who attended Coral Sea activities are under:-
