A torrential tropical downpour could not dampen the enthusiasm of the hundreds of guests, serving personnel, Naval Cadets, politicians and dignitaries attended the final decommissioning of the last two Fremantle Class Patrol boats at Trinity Wharf, Cairns.  Chief of Navy, VADM Russ Shalders, Fleet Commander RADM Davyd Thomas, HMS - RADM Trevor Ruting, Border Protection Commander RADM James Goldrick, The Hon Bill Hayden and his wife the Commissioning Lady of HMAS IPSWICH and CAPT Ian Watts daughter representing the Commissioning Lady HMAS TOWNSVILLE participated together with the CO of HMAS IPSWICH LCDR Darren Grogan and the CO of HMAS TOWNSVILLE LCDR Andrew Hawke and their respective Ship's Companies.

The COs read their decommissioning orders and a response was given by the Fleet Commander with addresses by the two Commanding Officers.  Chaplain Edward Renfrey officiated.  POMT Thomas Dawe, HMAS IPSWICH read from Isaiah 40:28-31 which was followed by a prayer of thanksgiving by the Chaplain.  CPOMT Frank Lobbi then led a Responsorial Prayer followed by further prayers and one minutes' silence for those who had served onboard HMAS IPSWICH and HMAS TOWNSVILLE.  The COs then presented the White Ensigns from their boats to the Fleet Commander.   LCDR JVW Hart, RANR provided a reading which was followed by a lantern ceremony conducted by Naval Cadets from TS CORAL, ENDEAVOUR AND IPSWICH.  The Fleet Commander made a final address and everybody present proceeded to a Reception in a marquee on the wharf.

Please accept my apologies for the poor quality of photos - unfortunately it was not a great night for photography unless you happened to have professional photographic equipment and lighting.

A lovely evening was had by all and the RAN farewelled the last of the Fremantle Class Patrol Boats in great style.
