'DARBY' ALLAN'S ASHES SCATTERED FROM HMAS SYDNEY
Gentlemen,
HMAS SYDNEY IV under the Command of CMDR Guy HOLTHOUSE visited Melbourne from 21st to 24th July to scatter the ashes of our last HMAS SYDNEY 1 Member and last WW1 Veteran, LEUT Evan "Darby" ALLAN at Sea on Monday 24th July, which would have been his 107th birthday. Our Asociation organised the State Funeral held at St. Marks Chapel at HMAS CERBERUS in October of last year and then arranged for HMAS SYDNEY IV to scatter the ashes.
Our Association entertained the C.O., X.O., and approximately 30 Members of the Ships Company at Chelsea RSL (Home of the HMAS SYDNEY Room) on Saturday afternoon culminating in us presenting the Ship with a framed montage of all Campaign Medals earned by the 4 SYDNEY'S and we also unveiled a framed Montage of Darbys remarkable Carrer spanning 34 years from a 14 year Boy Seaman through to a Commissioned Warrant Officer. This Montage will be on permanent display at Chelsea RSL as our tribute to "The Last Man Standing". Darby's daughter and Son in Law were in attendance and were quite blown away by the entire day.
Photos of the day at Chelsea RSL can be viewed by visiting our magnificent Website http://hmassydney.com and photos of the scattering of the Ashes at Sea can be viewed by visiting our Chapel and then the tribute section.
Attached photo was taken in the Wardroom onboard HMAS SYDNEY after the scattering ceremony.
Best wishes,
Marty Grogan
