Rear Admiral R.M. Hancock RAN

Deputy Chief of Navy

Navy Headquarters

Department of Defence

Russell Offices

CANBERRA   ACT   2600

Dear Admiral Hancock,

I have much pleasure in presenting a cheque to the value of eight thousand seven hundred and eighty nine dollars and fifty six cents ($8,789.56) through you to the Naval Heritage Fund specifically to assist in the restoration of the HMAS STRAHAN Japanese ensign.

The money is the residue of a fund initiated by the Naval Association of Australia (NAA) to purchase the George Cross awarded to Lieutenant George Gosse GC RANVR for rendering mines safe during the Second World War and its companion medals.  Although the NAA raised $42,467.00, it was unfortunately insufficient and the medals were sold to a private buyer.  The NAA was however able, in concert with other Ex-service organizations, to have the Federal Government declare the medal set a significant piece of Australia’s heritage and prohibit its export.

The NAA approached donors to the George Cross Fund to seek directions as to the disposal of their donations, either to have them returned or to have them donated to the Naval Heritage Centre for a specific restoration project.  Whilst the majority of donors opted to have the donations refunded, others took a more generous approach and the NAA was left with $8,789.56.

A list of the donors is attached.

Yours sincerely,

Les Dwyer
