BUNDAMBA SUB SECTION, QLD
NAVY WEEK COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE AND CAMARADARIE AT GOODNA RSL SUB BRANCH / CLUB - 26 AUGUST 2006
Bundamba Sub Section hosted the South Queensland Navy Week commemorative service and luncheon following the service.
Visiting HMA Ships ADELAIDE (CMDR AJJ O'Malley, RAN) and TOBRUK (CMDR MJ Rothwell, RAN) participated in all events strongly supported by their ship's companies.
The ships were open to visitors during their stay and participated in a ceremonial sunset at Southbank later in the afternoon following the commemorative service and luncheon at the Goodna RSL Club. The Lord Mayor of Brisbane hosted a Navy Week Cocktail Party at Brisbane Town Hall in the evening.
SNO South Queensland, CMDR Robert Plath speaking at the Commemorative service indicated that he was being posted towards the end of the year and that he had thoroughly enjoyed this posting to Queensland.
Two ex-JRs in the shape of our National President, Les Dwyer and retired CMDR Peter Franklin delivered the commemorative addresses. Les spoke about "Today's Navy" and Peter spoke about "The Ton Class" minesweepers.
As usual, the RAN Band and the personnel from Navy HQs performed superbly in their catafalque party duties assisted by Naval Cadets from TS IPSWICH.
The Rev Canon Gavin Ott, honorary Chaplain for the Sub Section conducted the service.
School Captains from Bundamba State Secondary School did a creditable rendition of Binyon's lines.
State MP and Member for Bundamba Ms Jo-Ann Miller presented books on completion of the service.
Piper Brian May of the Ipswich Thistle Pipe Band was magnificent.
