HISTORY:
The present Frankston Naval Memorial Club was built and dedicated on 24 August 1991 by the Frankston Sub Section, Naval Association of Australia that was formed and inaugurated into the NAA on 27 August 1963.
From the date of the inaugural meeting, Sub Section members met in several temporary venues, with the priority being the raising of funds to establish their own meeting place.
In 1968 the Sub Section purchased land in Barretts Road Baxter, on which they erected as it was to become affectionately known as the “Tin Shed” as a permanent meeting place.
After many years of hard work raising funds a more permanent structure was erected and opened as the Frankston Naval Memorial Club on 10 June 1986.
Unfortunately the building was destroyed by a disastrous fire in 1990, however the members were undeterred and once again they pulled together and on 24 August 1991 they raised from the ashes the magnificent club building that can be seen today.
A further milestone was reached when in 1998 a Remembrance Wall was erected adjacent to the club building to record the names of the Sub Section members who had “Passed over the Bar”
Also in 1998 the Club welcomed it’s first ever, non-Commonwealth members, when 2 retired U.S. Navy Chief’s were approved for membership, giving us a truly international flavour.
Later a Memorial Garden was established in the name a former member, Jim Bourke, in which rose bushes are planted in memory of former Club members & their families.
On ANZAC Day, following the annual march in Frankston, members and affiliates return to the Club for lunch and social drinks, often being joined by serving Sailors from HMAS Cerberus.
In November each year the Sub Section and FNMC Members and affiliates observe Remembrance Sunday with an informal Church Parade in front of the Memorial Wall on the Club grounds followed by a light lunch and drinks.
Our members are generous with their time and money, supporting several local charitable organisations, in addition to those in the extended navy family. They are extremely proud of their achievements as they uphold the motto of the Naval Association of Australia – “Each for All, All for Each”
