c/- Sub Section Secretary
It is with great pleasure that I advise you that the President of our sub section has for the second time in less than a year been recognised for his voluntary assistance to the veterans community and their families for over 23 years.
Moss received an OAM in June 2009 and this week was awarded the 2010 Australia Day Citizens Award.
I am sure you agree that this is a tremendous achievement that recognises his contribution towards the veterans community and in particular, the Naval Association. This includes but is not limited to his roles as President of Launceston South Sub Section, Pensions Advocate and Welfare Officer over a very long period of time.
Attached please find an excerpt from His Worship the Mayor of Launceston, Alderman Albert van Zetten's acknowledgement speech and an article from The Examiner Newspaper from the Reception held at the Albert Hall in honour of the award recipients on Monday 25 January 2010. A photograph of Moss receiving his award from the Governor of Tasmania will follow.
I believe this is wonderful and well deserved acknowledgement for hard work and worthy of some form of recognition on behalf of the Naval Association by the Executive of National and State. Moss's work is representative of what the Association stands for.Yours aye
Theresa Hawkins

His Worship the Mayor of Launceston, Alderman Albert van Zetten's acknowledgement speech
The second recipient of the 2010 Australia Day Citizen Award has worked for over 20 years supporting veterans in the community.
In 1984, after nine years service to the Royal Australian Navy and five years on the Active list of the Royal Australian Naval Reserve, this gentlemen joined the Launceston sub-branch of the RSL. In a voluntary part-time capacity he initially provided "Navy specific" advice to the RSL's advocates who were assisting veterans in their dealings with the Department of Veterans' Affairs.
He was elected to the Launceston RSL Committee where he contributed greatly to the management and organisation of the sub-branch.
At around the same time, this gentleman also joined the Launceston sub-section of the Naval Association of Australia and over many years was instrumental in providing advice, assistance and support to members.
By 1996 his commitment to the RSL involved working 2-3 days per week at the office and many hours in follow-up work conducted from home.
His own health was failing, but this didn’t stop him and he undertook formal training as both a pension and welfare officer to assist veterans further.
Subsequently his voluntary work grew beyond just providing advice and assistance to veterans and their families and he began visiting members of the veterans' community in their own homes, hospitals, nursing homes and hospices. He still continues to assist families with funereal arrangements and provides counselling and support to grieving families.
In 1995, he was involved in the formation of the Launceston RSL's Veteran Support Group which provides services to veterans and their dependents ranging from basic welfare support to gardening and home maintenance. This has become a showcase program Australia-wide.
He has since established the Launceston South sub-section of the Naval Association of Australia and his drive and leadership have been instrumental in membership numbers reaching more than 100 - the largest sub-section in Tasmania.
Affectionately known as Moss - his commitment has not diminished over time and he remains an inspiration to others. He is especially loved for his honesty, humour and for being a great Australian mate.
Ladies and gentlemen – please join me in congratulating Mr Maurice Lowe
